|
Tuesday, 08 May 2012 |
From Marine Corps Times:
"McIntyre, a Democrat, beat Republican Ilario Pantano, finding refuge
from a rising GOP tide in his reputation for conservatism and ability to
draw home federal dollars. McIntyre stood as the candidate who knew his
district and its needs in a way the relative newcomer Pantano did not. "This was a race about standing up for the people of southeastern North
Carolina," McIntyre told the Associated Press. "You have to know your
people and love your people if you're going to serve them. It's not for

Tennessee Legislature Passes Bill To Protect Religious Liberty |
|
|
|
Tuesday, 08 May 2012 |
|
From The Family Action Council Of Tennessee:
"The Tennessee legislature just passed a bill to protect the religious
liberty of student organizations at Tennessee’s publicly funded
colleges. But the real controversy was over a provision applying the law
to Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt
created a policy requiring student organizations to accept any student
who wants to be a member and to allow any student to run for a student
office, meaning an atheist could wind up being an officer of a Christian
organization. But fraternities and sororities didn’t want this kind of
“all-comers” policy applied to them, so Vanderbilt exempted them. This
unequal treatment didn’t escape the notice of the legislators.
Essentially the bill lets Vanderbilt choose between allowing
Christian organizations to require that their members and officers be
Christians or requiring Greek organizations to accept any interested
student too. Now the question is, “Which option will Vanderbilt choose?”

Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos and Board of Trust Chairman Mark
Dalton chastising the university for creating what the lawmakers say is
an “environment that is hostile” to the existence of religious groups on
